Visible Light Communication (VLC) using light emitting diodes (LEDs) is a technology that provides an opportunity for high-speed low-cost wireless communication, being an alternative for effective and efficient communication that can cope with the actual high-speed wireless services demand. In this paper, we give an overview of LED-based VLC and provide a comprehensive survey on advances and research activities in this technology, focusing on several aspects such as main elements of VLC systems, potential applications and challenges for practical implementation, integration and commercialization. In addition, VLC is compared with radio frequency (RF) systems and future directions in the field of high-speed LED-based VLC systems are
considered.
